What actually decides whether a learning platform checks your work for AI?

The platform is only the delivery layer. Because the same engine sits underneath every one of those integrations, Turnitin's product changes land everywhere it is connected at once. Does Gradescope check for AI writing?
Not on its own. Gradescope has no native AI-writing detector built into the product. Even where Turnitin is connected, a scanned handwritten submission is not the kind of text AI-writing detection was designed to score.
To check whether this applies to you, find out whether your school licenses Turnitin at all, because without that licence there is nothing to connect, then ask whether detection is enabled for that specific assignment. It is a per-course setting, not a Gradescope default.
Does Schoology have AI detection?
Schoology has no native AI-writing detector. Its role is managing courses, gradebooks and submissions, and detecting AI-generated text is a specialised function it delegates. Every AI check on a Schoology submission comes from a Turnitin or Copyleaks integration the school has enabled.
The Copyleaks path is worth naming, because Schoology schools use it as readily as Turnitin. Once it is switched on, Schoology routes submitted assignments through the connected service, which returns a similarity score and an AI-writing score together, inside the same report an instructor already uses for plagiarism.
The dated Turnitin changes reach Schoology courses too. The July 2026 model consolidation and the February 2026 anti-humanizer upgrade both apply automatically wherever Turnitin is connected, Schoology included, and shallow word swapping is exactly what that February update was built to catch. For your own class, look in the syllabus for a specific mention of Turnitin, Copyleaks or an AI-detection policy rather than a general plagiarism statement, and treat an absent policy as inconclusive, since a school can switch the integration on mid-semester.
Can Perusall detect AI writing?
Perusall has no built-in AI detector, and its own scoring measures something else entirely. Perusall is a social annotation platform: students read a shared document or video and leave comments in the margins, and an automatic algorithm rates those comments so instructors do not have to grade every annotation by hand.
Per Perusall's own documentation, that algorithm scores three things: thoughtfulness, meaning the comment shows real engagement rather than a one-line reaction; relevance, meaning it is anchored to a specific passage rather than generic; and engagement with peers, meaning replies and questions that build a conversation. None of those is an AI-detection signal. A smooth, well-written annotation can score well on all three even where a dedicated detector would flag its prose as machine-like, because the two systems measure different properties of the same text.
A school can still layer a Turnitin or Copyleaks integration on top of Perusall to scan submitted work, annotations included, the same way it would scan a Canvas assignment. Check your syllabus for an AI-detection policy on annotation or discussion participation specifically, not just on formal essays, and do not read a high Perusall score as evidence that nothing else is checking the text.
Which learning platforms work differently from this pattern?
Two of them, and both keep their own articles rather than being folded in here.
