How to remove em dashes from text

Paste your text into the box, choose what each dash should become, and click Remove em dashes. Comma is the default because it keeps the rhythm of the original sentence in most cases: “it works — mostly” becomes “it works, mostly”. Choose Full stop when the dash was joining two complete thoughts, Parentheses when a pair of dashes wraps an aside, or Hyphen if you want a visible separator without the typographic dash.

The tool never replaces a dash blindly. It looks at what sits either side of it, avoids doubling up punctuation (“wait, — no” becomes “wait, no”), capitalises the next word after a full stop, and leaves numeric ranges alone.

Why the em dash became an AI tell

Large language models were trained on edited prose — books, journalism, Wikipedia — where the em dash is common. They reproduce it at a rate most people never would in an email or an essay. By 2025 the pattern was widely noticed: writers on Reddit and Substack called it “the ChatGPT dash”, and OpenAI eventually added a way to ask the model to stop. Text that was generated before that, or by other models, still carries them.
