Do Teachers and Colleges Actually Use Turnitin? (2026)

Most colleges do, and at meaningful scale: Turnitin reports licensing its service to more than 16,000 universities and high schools worldwide, covering over 71 million students as of 2025. But no individual teacher just decides to start using it. It's an institutional license, purchased and configured at the school or department level, and a teacher only has it available if their institution already pays for it.

How the licensing actually works

A university or school district buys a Turnitin subscription that covers the whole institution, then individual instructors turn it on per assignment inside whatever learning management system the school already uses, Canvas, Blackboard, Google Classroom, or similar. A teacher at a school without a license has no way to add Turnitin to their own class on their own, and a teacher at a school with one can still choose not to enable it for a given assignment.

Turnitin is also only one option among several a licensed teacher might enable; the broader set of methods instructors use to spot AI writing, with or without Turnitin specifically, is covered in how can teachers detect AI writing.

Which colleges skip it entirely

A small number of prominent universities, including Harvard, Princeton, Yale, and Stanford, made public decisions not to adopt Turnitin institution-wide. That doesn't mean plagiarism or AI writing goes unchecked there; it means those schools rely on different tools or processes instead of a school-wide Turnitin license. If your school is one of these, an instructor asking you to run your own paper through a Turnitin-adjacent tool voluntarily is a different situation than an institutional requirement.

Do high school teachers use it too?

Yes, real K-12 adoption exists, licensed the same way, at the district or school level rather than by individual teachers. It's less universal than in higher education, where research papers and essay-heavy courses make similarity and AI checking routine. A district's budget, its academic-integrity policy, and even individual school decisions within the same district all affect whether a given classroom actually has access.

Once a paper is submitted somewhere that does use it, how the AI-writing side of the report actually works is covered in what does a Turnitin AI score mean.

Don't assume every class at a school uses Turnitin just because the school has a license. Enabling it per assignment is the instructor's call.

Don't assume a school skipping Turnitin has no AI-detection process. Some schools that opted out use a different tool entirely.

Frequently asked questions

Can a teacher use Turnitin if their school doesn't have a license?

No. Turnitin is licensed at the institution level. An individual teacher at a school without a subscription has no way to add it to their own classes.

Does every class at a college that licenses Turnitin actually use it?

Not necessarily. The license makes Turnitin available institution-wide, but whether a specific instructor enables it for a specific assignment is still their individual decision.

Why do some major universities not use Turnitin?

A handful, including Harvard, Princeton, Yale, and Stanford, made institutional decisions not to adopt it school-wide, generally relying on other integrity processes and tools instead. It's a policy choice, not evidence those schools don't check for plagiarism or AI writing at all.
